On January 7, 2026, ICE deportation officer Jonathan Ross shot and killed Renee Nicole Good, 37, during an immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis.
Good, a mother of three, was sitting inside her vehicle observing ICE activity in her neighborhood when the encounter occurred.
Ross fired three shots into her moving vehicle, killing her. An independent autopsy later determined that Good suffered gunshot wounds to the left forearm and right breast.
Federal officials and the Department of Homeland Security said Ross acted in self-defense, alleging that Good had weaponized her vehicle and endangered him. They pointed to a previous incident in which Ross had been hospitalized after being dragged by a fleeing suspect’s vehicle.
Good’s family attorneys dispute that account. They argue that publicly available video shows Ross attempting to turn away from the vehicle rather than being trapped directly in its path, and they contend that his use of deadly force violated DHS policies.
As of October 2026, Ross has not been criminally charged.
The Justice Department declined federal criminal charges, and an FBI investigation into the shooting reportedly ended after federal prosecutors concluded Ross was acting within the scope of his administrative and investigative duties.
On October 1, Good’s family filed two civil lawsuits.
One alleges wrongful death and constitutional violations, arguing that Ross used excessive force and that ICE created conditions that made the shooting more likely.
The second names Ross alongside several high-ranking government officials and alleges a broader conspiracy involving immigration enforcement in Minnesota.
Those lawsuits remain pending, and their allegations have not been proven in court. The White House has called them baseless and said it intends to defend against them.
Whatever happens in civil court, the central fact remains:
Renee Nicole Good was 37 years old. She was a mother of three. An ICE officer fired three times into her vehicle, and she died. Whether that shooting was legally justified is exactly the kind of question accountability requires us to keep asking.
