Alan Smith Killed Eight Members of His Family, Including Four Children, Before Taking His Own Life

In August 2026, 44-year-old Alan Smith shot and killed eight members of his family while they were gathered for a Sunday dinner outside Billings, Montana.

The victims spanned four generations of one family.

Four of them were children.

According to authorities and family members, Smith's parents had forced him to move out of their suburban home several weeks before the killings. He returned to the property on the night of the attack and opened fire on his relatives.

Smith killed his grandmother, his parents, his younger sister, and four children.

When Yellowstone County Sheriff's deputies arrived, they heard gunfire coming from the property.

Investigators determined that Smith had also intentionally set the house on fire. The home became heavily engulfed in flames as emergency crews responded.

Smith died at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Because he died, there will be no criminal prosecution and no trial.

But “murder-suicide” is an awfully small phrase for what happened to eight other human beings.

Eight people were murdered at a family dinner. Four were children. They belonged to four generations of the same family. Alan Smith made the decision to kill and then made the decision to die. His family didn't get a fucking choice in either.
