Brendan Banfield: The IRS Agent Who Turned Murder Into a Cover Story

Brendan Banfield was a federal IRS agent. He was also convicted of murdering his wife, Christine Banfield, and Joseph Ryan after prosecutors said he helped construct an elaborate scheme designed to make the killings look like a violent home invasion.

According to prosecutors, Banfield and the family’s au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhães, were having an affair. Investigators said they created a fake profile on a fetish website, posed as Christine, and arranged for Ryan to come to the Banfield home. On February 24, 2023, Ryan was shot and Christine was fatally stabbed.

Prosecutors argued that the chaos wasn’t accidental. It was manufactured.

In February 2026, a Fairfax County jury convicted Banfield of aggravated murder and other felonies. At sentencing, the judge described his actions as “evil and calculated” and imposed two consecutive life sentences plus 20 years.

A federal badge. A wife betrayed. A stranger allegedly lured into a trap. Two people dead.

And underneath all of it, prosecutors said, was a plan built to make murder look like something else entirely.
