Chad Williams Killed Two People and Wounded Several Others in an Idaho Mass Shooting Before Taking His Own Life

On August 1, 2026, 24-year-old Chad Williams opened fire outside a newly opened In-N-Out Burger in Twin Falls, Idaho, killing two people and wounding several others.

Authorities say Williams drove to the restaurant in a white Honda Civic, approached the drive-thru window and began firing.

23-year-old In-N-Out employee Ashley Garibay was shot and killed.

Williams then reportedly continued firing at people in vehicles and near a Tesla charging station, where he fatally shot 59-year-old Christopher Claunch.

Several other people were wounded, including 66-year-old Dale Schultz.

The attack was interrupted when Steve McClain, an off-duty Idaho State Trooper, and Jordan Salinas, an armed private citizen, confronted Williams and returned fire.

Authorities said their intervention forced Williams away from the restaurant and prevented further casualties.

Williams fled toward a nearby walking trail along the canyon rim. He was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Investigators determined that Williams acted alone. Despite reviewing his history and interviewing relatives, authorities said they had found no clear motive for the attack.

On September 26, 2026, the Twin Falls County prosecuting attorney officially cleared the responding officer who fired during the shooting, concluding that the use of force was justified to protect people fleeing the violence.

Survivors continued recovering from their injuries for weeks afterward. One local taxi driver who suffered a punctured lung was finally discharged from the hospital on September 30 after a two-month stay.

Because Williams died, there will be no criminal trial. Authorities' conclusion that he carried out the attack comes from the subsequent investigation.
