Former Cleveland Police Officer Matthew Piter Was Convicted of Sex Crimes. He Got Probation.

Matthew Piter was a patrol officer with the Cleveland Division of Police when women accused him of sexual assault.

Two separate women came forward. Piter faced rape charges involving both of them.

At his 2022 trial, a judge acquitted Piter of the rape charges. That distinction matters.

But Piter was convicted of two counts of gross sexual imposition, both fourth-degree felonies, stemming from an October 2019 incident.

Two days after the guilty verdict, he resigned from the Cleveland police force.

His sentence was three years of probation.

No prison.

Piter was also designated a Tier I sex offender, requiring him to register for 15 years.
