On August 28, 2023, four members of a family were found dead inside their apartment on West 86th Street on Manhattan's Upper West Side.

Police identified the father as 41-year-old Edison Lopez, the superintendent of the building.

Authorities determined that Lopez fatally attacked his 40-year-old wife, Aleksandra Witek, and their two sons, ages 1 and 3, before taking his own life.

The family was discovered after relatives became concerned when they couldn't reach them. The apartment was locked from the inside, and police and emergency personnel responded to the scene.

All four were pronounced dead.

Neighbors described the family as loving and stable. Authorities reportedly found no documented history of domestic-violence incidents or previous emergency calls to the residence.

That absence matters because domestic violence does not always leave a trail that outsiders can see before the worst happens.

But this story should not become another headline centered entirely on the man who destroyed his family.
