Edward James Zakrzewski II Murdered His Wife and Two Young Children After She Asked for a Divorce

Edward James Zakrzewski II was a former U.S. Air Force technical sergeant who murdered his wife and their two children inside their Mary Esther, Florida, home in 1994.

The victims were 36-year-old Sylvia Zakrzewski and their children, Edward III, 7, and Anna, 5.

On June 9, 1994, Zakrzewski learned that Sylvia wanted a divorce.

He purchased a machete.

That evening, prosecutors said Zakrzewski attacked Sylvia with a crowbar, a rope, and the machete, killing her.

He then used the machete to kill both of his children, who suffered extensive defensive wounds.

After murdering his family, Zakrzewski fled Florida and traveled to Hawaii, where he lived under an assumed name.

He remained a fugitive until authorities captured him in October 1994, just one day after his case was featured on Unsolved Mysteries.

Zakrzewski later pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree murder.

In 1996, he was sentenced to death. The trial judge imposed three death sentences despite a jury recommendation of life imprisonment.

Zakrzewski remained on Florida's death row for nearly three decades.

On July 31, 2025, after his appeals were exhausted, Florida executed him by lethal injection. He was pronounced dead at 6:12 p.m.

Whatever arguments surround capital punishment, the people at the center of this entry are Sylvia, Edward, and Anna.

Sylvia Zakrzewski wanted a divorce. Her husband responded by murdering her and their children. Edward was 7. Anna was 5. Both children fought hard enough to leave defensive wounds on their bodies. They were fucking babies fighting for their lives against their own father.
