Former CBP Employee Efren Cornejo Sexually Abused His Stepdaughter for Years. He Got Probation.

Efren Lopez Cornejo worked for U.S. Customs and Border Protection and was an Army veteran.

The child he abused was his own stepdaughter.

According to the case presented, the sexual abuse began in 2011, when she was just 9 years old, and continued repeatedly until 2017.

She later testified that Cornejo used his law enforcement authority to intimidate and monitor her.

And she wasn't the only child involved.

A second girl said Cornejo exposed himself to her in 2006, when she was also 9 years old.

Cornejo was arrested in 2021 and originally faced an indictment containing 14 counts.

In 2024, he accepted a plea agreement and pleaded guilty to one count of child molestation and one count of indecent exposure to a minor.

Then came the sentence.

Lifetime probation. No jail. No prison.

The judge imposed two lifetime probation terms. Under the specific terms of the plea agreement, Cornejo also was not required to register as a sex offender if he complied with court-ordered guidelines.

His stepdaughter was granted a lifetime protection order against him.

She was nine when the abuse began.

It continued for years.

She got a lifetime order to keep him away. He got a lifetime of probation to stay out of prison.
