Former Montgomery Police Officer Markelle Cox Convicted of Sexually Abusing a Handcuffed Woman and Obstructing Justice

Former Montgomery Police Officer Markelle Jaquan Cox Sexually Abused a Woman in Handcuffs. A Federal Jury Convicted Him.

Markelle Jaquan Cox was a Montgomery, Alabama police officer when he responded to a shoplifting call at a department store on October 20, 2023.

Cox handcuffed a female suspect and escorted her to his patrol vehicle.

She was already in his custody when he used his authority to sexually abuse her.

According to federal prosecutors, Cox touched the woman intimately under her clothing and then forced her to touch him.

The woman did not speak English. Evidence at trial showed that Cox used a translation app on his phone to solicit sex from her.

Before releasing her, he forced her to add his phone number to her contacts.

Then he lied about what happened.

Investigators recovered body-camera footage and searched both phones, uncovering digital evidence that contradicted Cox's statements. Prosecutors said he repeatedly provided false information during the investigation.

On September 18, 2026, a federal jury convicted Cox of four counts of deprivation of rights under color of law and three counts of obstruction of justice.

He now faces up to 20 years in federal prison. His sentence has not yet been imposed.

This woman was handcuffed. She didn't speak English. Cox was the armed police officer controlling whether she walked away or went to jail.

She was in his custody. He was supposed to protect her rights. Instead, a jury found that he sexually abused her and then tried to fucking cover it up.
