ICE Was Looking for Someone Else. Lorenzo Salgado Araujo Was Fatally Shot After Agents Stopped the Wrong Man.

ICE Officer Shot Lorenzo Salgado Araujo After Federal Agents Stopped the Wrong Man

Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was a 52-year-old Mexican national, construction worker, husband, and father living in Houston when he was fatally shot by an ICE officer on July 7, 2026.

That morning, Salgado Araujo was driving his white work van to a construction job with several passengers when federal agents attempted to stop him in East Houston.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, Salgado Araujo was not the person ICE was looking for.

Authorities said agents had been conducting a targeted operation involving a different address and another vehicle associated with people suspected of lacking legal immigration status. Salgado Araujo's vehicle was misidentified.

What happened after the mistaken stop remains disputed.

DHS claimed Salgado Araujo attempted to evade arrest and rammed an ICE vehicle, prompting an officer to fire in self-defense.

Attorneys representing his family dispute that account and say Salgado Araujo was shot without justification.

Early allegations also suggested narcotics were found in his vehicle. According to the information available here, the U.S. Attorney's Office later confirmed that laboratory testing of the suspected methamphetamine was negative. Attorneys for the family said the substance was a homemade electrolyte and hydration mixture used by construction workers in extreme summer heat.

Three passengers in Salgado Araujo's van, including his brother, were detained after the shooting. A federal judge later ordered the release of witnesses Jose Trinidad Rojas Pliego and Julio López.

Salgado Araujo had lived in the United States for approximately 35 years. Although he did not have legal immigration status, his family said he had no criminal record and operated a small construction business. His wife and three children are U.S. citizens.

As of late September 2026, a Harris County grand jury was hearing evidence to determine whether the ICE officer who fired the fatal shots should face criminal charges. At least three people reportedly testified before the grand jury.

That means the legal conclusion is not yet written. The officer has not been convicted or charged based on the information available here, and the competing accounts of the shooting should not be presented as settled fact.

But one fact is especially difficult to look past:

ICE was looking for someone else. Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was not their target. The stop began with the wrong fucking man, and it ended with him dead.
