Jay’meir Davis, 16, Faces Five Murder Charges in Targeted East St. Louis Mass Shooting

16-Year-Old Jay’meir Davis Is Accused of Helping Carry Out a Targeted Mass Shooting That Killed Five Family Members

Jay’meir Davis, a 16-year-old from East St. Louis, Illinois, is facing 12 criminal charges as an adult, including five counts of first-degree murder, following a July 2026 shooting that left five members of one family dead.

Authorities say Davis and his 15-year-old girlfriend carried out shootings across three locations, including Jones Park and the Samuel Gompers public-housing complex.

Police described the violence as a “targeted mass shooting.”

Five family members were killed and two other people were critically injured.

According to the 15-year-old girl's father, his daughter had been angry with her family and allegedly planned the massacre with Davis. Prosecutors have also pointed to text messages exchanged between the teenagers before the killings as evidence in the case.

Because Illinois law excludes first-degree murder charges from juvenile jurisdiction for defendants who are 16 or older, Davis is being prosecuted as an adult.

He faces five counts of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder, two counts of aggravated battery, one count of dismembering a human body, one count of aggravated vehicular hijacking, and one count of unlawful use of a stolen firearm.

Davis's public defender has challenged the prosecution's version of events, arguing that the teenager acted in self-defense and describing him as “not the hunter but rather the hunted.”

Davis remains in custody awaiting trial. Prosecutors have separately sought to have his 15-year-old co-defendant's case transferred from juvenile court to adult criminal court.

These are allegations. Neither teenager has been convicted, and the prosecution's account of who planned and carried out the killings remains subject to litigation.

Five people are dead, two more were critically wounded, and the defendants themselves are children.

There is nothing simple about a case where five members of a family are dead and the people accused of killing them are only 15 and 16 years old. Accountability means holding space for both facts at once without turning fucking allegations into a verdict before a jury ever hears the case.
