Jean-Claude Romand: He Lied About Being a Doctor for 18 Years. Then His Family Found Out.

For nearly two decades, Jean-Claude Romand built an entire life around a lie.

His family believed he was a successful doctor and researcher working with the World Health Organization. In reality, Romand had never completed medical school. He spent his days wandering public buildings, sitting in highway rest stops, and studying medical journals so he could come home sounding like the man everyone believed him to be.

He financed the illusion by taking money from relatives and friends who thought he was investing it for them.

By 1993, the money was disappearing. The lies were collapsing. People were beginning to ask questions.

So Romand murdered the people closest to the truth.

He killed his wife, Florence. Then he shot their two children, Caroline, 7, and Antoine, 5. The following day, he went to his parents’ home, ate with them, and killed them and their dog.

He later attempted to kill a former mistress, but she survived.

Romand returned home, swallowed expired sleeping pills, and set the house on fire. Firefighters rescued him.

In 1996, he was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment. After more than two decades behind bars, he was granted conditional release in 2019.

Eighteen years pretending to be someone he wasn’t. When the truth threatened to surface, five members of his family paid for his lie with their lives.
