On January 11, 2013, 17-year-old Kendrick Johnson was found dead inside a vertically positioned rolled-up gym mat at Lowndes High School in Valdosta, Georgia.
Kendrick had been reported missing the previous day after failing to return home.
Local law enforcement and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation concluded that Kendrick's death was a tragic accident. Investigators said he climbed into the center of the mat while trying to retrieve a shoe, became trapped upside down, and suffocated.
His official cause of death was positional asphyxia.
Kendrick's parents, Jackie and Kenneth Johnson, have never accepted that explanation.
An independent autopsy commissioned by the family reached a dramatically different conclusion, finding unexplained blunt-force trauma to Kendrick's neck and determining that his death was not accidental.
The family also raised questions about the physical circumstances of the official explanation, including whether Kendrick could have fit through the mat's opening as investigators described.
There was additional controversy after Kendrick's body was exhumed and the private autopsy revealed that his internal organs were missing and his body cavity had been filled with newspaper. The funeral home maintained that this resulted from standard practices after the organs were destroyed or otherwise unavailable following the initial autopsy.
The case has been repeatedly investigated and litigated.
In 2016, the U.S. Department of Justice closed its federal investigation, saying investigators had found insufficient evidence to support federal criminal charges. The DOJ's decision did not amount to a finding that every question surrounding Kendrick's death had been resolved.
More than a decade later, Kendrick's family continues challenging the official account.
In March 2026, a federal judge dismissed an $11 billion civil lawsuit brought by the family against former classmates, school personnel, law enforcement officials, and others, finding that many claims were barred by legal doctrines including immunity and statutes of limitations.
The family subsequently filed another federal lawsuit seeking approximately $10 billion, alleging a conspiracy among officials to conceal what happened to Kendrick. Those allegations remain claims in civil litigation and have not been established as fact.
In July 2026, Kendrick's family and supporters traveled to the U.S. Supreme Court in Washington, D.C., continuing their effort to obtain further review and accountability.
There are two things that have to remain separate in documenting this case: authorities officially concluded Kendrick's death was accidental, while his family and their privately retained experts continue to dispute that conclusion.
Both belong in the record.
What should never get lost underneath the lawsuits, theories, autopsies, and years of argument is Kendrick himself. He was 17 years old. He went to school and never fucking came home.
