Matthew Mitchell Killed His Wife and Two Young Children in River Oaks Murder-Suicide

Matthew Mitchell Killed His Wife and Two Young Children Before Taking His Own Life

On May 4, 2026, Houston police discovered four members of the Mitchell family dead inside their home in the River Oaks neighborhood.

The victims were Thy Mitchell, 39, and her children, an 8-year-old daughter named Maya and a 4-year-old son named Maxwell.

Authorities determined that Thy’s husband, 52-year-old Matthew Mitchell, shot and killed his wife and their two children before dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police were sent to the family’s home on Kingston Street for a welfare check after a babysitter and relative became concerned because they had not heard from the family.

Inside, officers found all four dead from gunshot wounds.

Matthew and Thy Mitchell were well known in Houston’s culinary community and co-owned the Montrose-area restaurants Traveler’s Table and Traveler’s Cart.

Months after the killings, Thy’s parents filed a wrongful-death lawsuit that provided additional allegations about what may have been happening before the deaths.

According to the lawsuit, recovered Ring camera recordings showed Matthew expressing extreme distress over serious financial problems and fears of impending lawsuits. Thy’s parents also allege that, shortly before the killings, Matthew attempted to move approximately $1.4 million into outside family accounts to conceal the money.

Those allegations are part of the civil litigation and should not be treated as established findings about his motive.

Because Matthew died at the scene, there will be no criminal trial. The conclusion that he killed his family before himself comes from the official investigation.

Thy Mitchell was 39. Maya was eight. Maxwell was four. Whatever financial disaster Matthew Mitchell believed was coming belonged to him. His wife and children did not fucking choose to die with it.
