Paris Oda Murdered His Wife and Three Children Before Killing Himself

On March 10, 2024, 46-year-old Paris Oda killed his wife and their three children inside the family’s home in Mānoa, Honolulu, before taking his own life.

The victims were Naoko Oda, 48, and their children Sakurako, 17, Orion, 12, and Nana, 10.

According to authorities, the killings occurred during the early morning hours. Oda used a kitchen knife to fatally stab his family before turning the knife on himself.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner determined that Naoko and the children died from multiple sharp-force injuries and torso wounds. Evidence indicated that they had tried to defend themselves.

A tenant living on the property hid during the attack and eventually escaped to contact police. Officers discovered the five bodies later that morning.

Investigators said severe financial distress was the primary motive. Oda had reportedly accumulated significant debt, fallen behind on bills and school tuition, and expressed fears about potentially going to jail for tax evasion.

Most chillingly, investigators learned that Oda had been planning the killings for weeks. He reportedly texted Naoko that they “needed to plan to do it” because he believed nobody else could care for their children.

He had also unsuccessfully attempted to purchase a firearm shortly before the killings.

Financial problems may explain some of the circumstances surrounding what happened. They do not make the deaths of Naoko, Sakurako, Orion, and Nana a collective decision.

Paris Oda decided his family should die.

Naoko was 48. Sakurako was 17. Orion was 12. Nana was 10. Evidence showed they fought back. Whatever Paris Oda believed about debt, jail, or their future, their lives were never his fucking decision to make.
