The victims were Keith Caneiro, 50; his wife, Jennifer Caneiro, 45; and their children, Jesse, 11, and Sophia, 8.
On November 20, 2018, authorities discovered the four victims after responding to a massive fire at the family's home.
Investigators determined that Paul shot his brother Keith outside the house.
He then went inside.
There, prosecutors said he shot and stabbed Jennifer and stabbed both children to death.
After killing all four members of the family, Caneiro disabled the home's surveillance system and set the mansion on fire.
But that wasn't the only fire that morning.
Hours earlier, Caneiro had deliberately set fire to his own home in Ocean Township while his wife and daughters were still inside. Prosecutors said it was part of an elaborate attempt to destroy evidence and make himself appear to be another target. His family escaped.
The motive centered on money.
Paul and Keith jointly operated two businesses. Prosecutors presented evidence that Paul had been embezzling money from the businesses and a family trust, taking approximately $11,000 per month for personal use.
Keith discovered what was happening.
The night before the murders, he confronted his brother, demanded the money be returned, and gave him an 8 p.m. deadline the following day to repay the funds or dissolve their business relationship.
Keith and his family were dead before that deadline arrived.
After a two-month trial, a Monmouth County jury deliberated for approximately five hours before finding Caneiro guilty on all 16 counts on February 13, 2026, including four counts of first-degree murder, aggravated arson, theft, and weapons offenses.
On May 19, 2026, Caneiro received four consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole, the maximum punishment available.
This case began with financial betrayal. It ended with four people murdered, including two children.
Keith discovered his brother was stealing from the family and demanded accountability. Paul Caneiro's response was to kill Keith, Jennifer, 11-year-old Jesse, and 8-year-old Sophia, then set their fucking house on fire. He will spend the rest of his life in prison.
