Richard Leigh Bell Faced Nine Felony Child Sexual Abuse Charges. He Got Probation Instead of Prison.

Richard Leigh Bell Faced Nine Felony Child Sexual Abuse Charges. He Received Probation.

Richard Leigh Bell was originally indicted in Travis County, Texas, on nine felony charges involving alleged sexual abuse of a child.

The charges included continuous sexual abuse of a child under 14, six counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child, and two counts of indecency with a child.

Then the case changed dramatically.

In November 2025, prosecutors dismissed all nine original felony charges as part of a plea agreement. Bell pleaded guilty to a single, lesser charge of injury to a child, a third-degree felony.

The deal reportedly came after a witness came forward with information favorable to Bell's defense.

His sentence was five years of deferred probation.

No jail time.

Bell was also required to register as a sex offender and prohibited from contacting the victim, her family, or other minors.

The outcome prompted public outrage, including criticism from the victim's father, who argued that a five-year prison sentence would not have been sufficient, much less probation.

Bell was not convicted of the original sexual assault charges, and that distinction belongs in the record.

So does this:

Nine felony child sexual abuse charges became one lesser conviction and no time behind bars.
