Sandra, Shelby and Shasta Miller Were Shot to Death. The Man Accused of Killing Them Fled Into the Wilderness and Never Faced Trial.

Shane Franklin Miller Was Accused of Murdering His Wife and Two Young Daughters Before Fleeing Into the California Wilderness

Shane Franklin Miller became the sole suspect in the 2013 killings of his wife, Sandra Miller, and their two daughters, Shelby, 8, and Shasta, 4, in Shingletown, California.

On May 7, 2013, authorities responded to a 911 call from the family's home.

Inside, they found Sandra, Shelby, and Shasta shot multiple times.

Miller disappeared.

Authorities said he fled roughly 200 miles west into the rugged Lost Coast region of Humboldt County. His abandoned pickup truck was later discovered near Petrolia, triggering a massive search involving multiple law-enforcement agencies.

Miller had survivalist experience and a documented criminal history involving illegal weapons possession. Authorities considered him heavily armed and extremely dangerous, and in July 2013 the U.S. Marshals added him to its 15 Most Wanted fugitives list.

For more than a year, he remained missing.

Then, in 2014, skeletal remains were discovered near a riverbank in Humboldt County. Dental records confirmed they belonged to Miller.

A forensic examination determined that he had died from a single gunshot wound to the head, consistent with suicide.

Miller therefore never stood trial for the murders of Sandra, Shelby, and Shasta. He was the suspect, not a convicted murderer, and that distinction belongs in the record.

So do their names.

Sandra Miller. Shelby Miller, 8. Shasta Miller, 4. A mother and two little girls were shot to death inside their home. The man accused of killing them disappeared into the wilderness and died before a courtroom could ever determine his guilt. They never got a fucking trial.
