In 2018, Shane Piche was a 25-year-old school bus driver in Watertown, New York, when he raped a 14-year-old girl who attended the school district where he worked.
According to the case against him, Piche contacted the girl through social media, invited her to his home, provided her with alcohol, and raped her.
He was arrested and ultimately pleaded guilty to third-degree rape. Under New York law, a 14-year-old cannot legally consent to sex with an adult.
In April 2019, prosecutors asked that his sentence include jail time.
He received none.
Instead, Judge James P. McClusky sentenced Piche to 10 years of probation. He was also required to register as a Level 1 sex offender, pay court-related costs, obey orders of protection, and stay away from anyone under 17 unless accompanied by an adult.
The sentence sparked outrage in the community and beyond. The school district terminated Piche after his arrest.
A 25-year-old adult. A 14-year-old child. A guilty plea to rape.
And not one day in jail.
