Bryan Schmidt Killed His Parents, 22-Year-Old Son, and Girlfriend in Illinois Quadruple Murder-Suicide

Bryan Schmidt Murdered His Parents, Son, and Girlfriend Before Killing Himself in Illinois

On October 18, 2026, Bryan Schmidt, 51, shot and killed four people before dying by suicide inside his family's home in Mundelein, Illinois.

The victims were:

  • James Schmidt, 80, his father

  • Rebecca Schmidt, 77, his mother

  • Maclaine Schmidt, 22, his son

  • Nicole Heiser, 37, his longtime girlfriend

The bodies were discovered late Sunday night after a concerned family member requested a welfare check when relatives couldn't be reached.

According to investigators, the shootings occurred sometime between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the home of Schmidt's parents.

James and Rebecca were retired veterinarians whom neighbors remembered as kind, generous people.

Maclaine, Bryan's 22-year-old son, had been living in Lake Bluff, Illinois.

Nicole worked as a veterinary assistant at GreenTree Animal Hospital in Libertyville.

Bryan was also a veterinarian and had previously managed Northern Illinois Cat Clinic, a family-owned veterinary practice that had closed approximately a year earlier.

Investigators determined that Bryan killed all four victims before shooting himself.

Authorities recovered multiple suicide notes, including notes found at the scene and inside his vehicle. Their contents have not been publicly disclosed.

Police reported no previous emergency calls or documented incidents involving Schmidt or the victims.

Investigators also seized electronic devices to examine communications and reconstruct what happened before the killings.

No official motive has been established.

Because Schmidt died, there will be no criminal trial.

Friends and neighbors have organized fundraising efforts to help cover Nicole's funeral expenses, while donations honoring the Schmidt family have been directed toward an animal rescue organization.

James and Rebecca spent their careers caring for animals. Nicole did, too. Maclaine was only 22.

Four people were murdered by someone they knew and trusted. Whatever Bryan Schmidt wrote in those suicide notes, none of them deserved to die because of it.
