Colin Jeffrey “CJ” Haynie Murdered His Mother and Three Siblings, Then Tried to Kill His Father

On January 17, 2020, 16-year-old Colin Jeffrey “CJ” Haynie stayed home from school in Grantsville, Utah, with the intention of murdering his family.

He waited for them to return home, killing them one by one over approximately five hours.

His first victims were his mother, Consuelo Alejandra Haynie, 52, and his 12-year-old sister, Milan.

Both were shot and killed around 1 p.m., shortly after returning from a school pickup.

Approximately an hour later, his 15-year-old sister, Alexis, arrived home. Haynie shot and killed her, too.

Three hours later, his 14-year-old brother, Matthew, returned home.

Haynie shot and killed him.

By the time his father, Colin Haynie, arrived home around 6:15 p.m., four members of the family were dead.

Haynie shot his father in the leg, but his father managed to wrestle the gun away from him.

A neighbor who arrived to return a borrowed item helped transport the injured father and Haynie to a local hospital. During the drive, Haynie reportedly confessed to the killings, prompting his father to call 911.

An older brother who was away at college was the only immediate family member Haynie had not targeted.

Haynie was charged as an adult.

On July 19, 2022, he pleaded guilty to four counts of aggravated murder and one count of attempted aggravated murder.

On July 12, 2023, he was sentenced to four consecutive terms of 25 years to life, meaning he must serve at least 100 years in prison before becoming eligible for parole.

He also received a concurrent sentence of 25 years to life for attempting to murder his father.

Investigators never established a definitive motive. Haynie remained largely uncooperative when questioned about why he had killed his family.

Consuelo was 52. Milan was 12. Alexis was 15. Matthew was 14. They came home from ordinary days, one after another, to a brother and son who was waiting to fucking murder them.
