In February 2020, Richard James Logan, a former Texas pastor and nonprofit executive, murdered his wife and their 11-year-old son before attacking his adult daughter and dying by suicide.
Logan had been a prominent figure in Sugar Land, Texas. He previously served as a missions pastor at River Pointe Church and was the founder and CEO of Attack Poverty, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping underserved communities.
But behind that public reputation, something devastating was unfolding inside his family.
Between February 8 and 9, 2020, Logan shot and killed his wife, Diana Logan, 48, and their son, Aaron Logan, 11, inside the family's Sugar Land home.
Investigators determined that Diana had been shot multiple times. Aaron had been shot once.
On February 10, Logan drove approximately 160 miles to San Marcos, Texas, where his adult daughter was attending college.
There, he physically attacked her and attempted to strangle her, leaving visible bruising.
Then he abruptly stopped and left.
The assault was not immediately reported to police.
Early the following morning, February 11, Logan drove to an equipment yard belonging to TAS Environmental Services in Guadalupe County, south of San Marcos.
There, he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Later that afternoon, authorities requested a welfare check at the Logan family's Sugar Land residence.
When no one answered, officers gained entry with assistance from a neighbor and family friend.
Inside, they discovered the bodies of Diana and Aaron.
Ballistics evidence subsequently confirmed that the same firearm was used to kill Diana and Aaron and in Logan's suicide.
Investigators from multiple agencies examined the circumstances surrounding the killings, but authorities never established a definitive motive.
Family members, neighbors, and church leaders expressed shock. Those who knew Logan publicly described no obvious warning signs of financial trouble, marital conflict, or severe distress.
But a respected public reputation does not change what happened inside that house.
A man who spent years presenting himself as a community leader murdered his wife and child. He then traveled across Texas and attacked his surviving daughter before ending his own life.
Because Logan died, there was no criminal trial. Law enforcement classified the deaths of Diana and Aaron as homicides and Logan's death as suicide.
Diana Logan was 48. Aaron Logan was just 11 years old. Their surviving daughter was attacked by the same man who killed them. Whatever Richard Logan meant to his church or community, his wife and son deserved to live, and his daughter deserved to be safe from her own fucking father.
