On February 10, 2024, 15-year-old Jacob Aaron Martin Jr. shot and killed three members of his adoptive family inside their home in Malvern, Arkansas.
The victims were:
Jacob Martin Sr., 47, his adoptive father
Dara Martin, 53, his adoptive mother
Aleah Martin, 16, his sister
Investigators determined that Martin shot all three multiple times with a high-powered firearm, firing a total of 16 bullets.
Then he poured gasoline inside the house and set it on fire.
Emergency crews responded to the blaze around 4 p.m. When firefighters entered the home, they discovered the three bodies.
The fire had extinguished itself before destroying the evidence.
Martin fled to a neighbor's house, where he was later located.
A lengthy legal battle followed over whether he would be prosecuted as a juvenile or an adult.
A judge ultimately ruled that he would be tried as an adult. However, because he was 15 when the murders occurred, prosecutors could not seek the death penalty or life without parole under Arkansas law.
On February 3, 2026, Martin pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree murder, arson, abuse of a corpse, and tampering with physical evidence.
He was sentenced to 40 years in prison followed by seven years of supervised parole.
Under the terms of his sentence, he must serve at least 34 years before becoming eligible for release.
Jacob Sr. was 47. Dara was 53. Aleah was just 16.
Three people were murdered inside their own home by a boy they were raising as family.
Aleah should have been worrying about school, friends, and what came after graduation. Instead, her own brother shot her to death and set their home on fire.
Forty years is the sentence. Three lives are the cost.
