Julian McElhaney Sentenced to 100 Years to Life for Murdering Both of His Parents in Fresno

On April 10, 2022, Julian Charles McElhaney, then 22, shot and killed both of his parents inside their home in Fresno, California.

The victims were William McElhaney, 55, and Sylvia McElhaney, 64.

According to investigators, the shooting followed a domestic argument. McElhaney reportedly believed his parents were trying to poison him.

After shooting them multiple times, he called 911 himself.

When Fresno police arrived, they found McElhaney sitting on the front lawn, waiting for officers.

His father was found dead in the front yard. His mother was discovered inside a bathroom.

McElhaney confessed to the killings.

Prosecutors initially considered seeking the death penalty because the case involved multiple murders.

Instead, on September 17, 2026, McElhaney entered a no-contest plea to two counts of first-degree murder, admitting firearm enhancements as part of a plea agreement.

On October 16, he was sentenced to 100 years to life in California state prison.

He also waived his right to appeal and was ordered to pay $15,000 to the California Victim Compensation Board, along with a $1,000 restitution fine.

During sentencing, relatives spoke about the devastation left behind.

McElhaney's cousin, Rudy Cruz, described the ripple effects of the murders throughout the family. Another relative, Pollyanna McElhaney, spoke about the difficult balance between compassion and accountability.

William was 55. Sylvia was 64. They were murdered by the son they had raised.

Their family now has to live with the loss of two people and the knowledge that another family member is responsible.

A hundred years to life is a sentence. It doesn't give William and Sylvia back the years they should have had. And it doesn't begin to repair what their family lost.
