On August 23, 2026, four people were shot to death inside a home in Lawrenceville, Georgia.
The victims were:
Meenu Dogra, 43, Kumar's wife
Gourav Kumar, 33, a relative
Nidhi Chander, 37, a relative
Harish Chander, 38, a relative
The accused killer is Vijay Kumar, 51, Meenu's husband.
According to investigators, Kumar's 12-year-old daughter called 911 while hiding in a closet with two younger children, ages 10 and 7.
When police arrived, they discovered four people dead.
Kumar was arrested and charged with four counts of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and multiple counts of cruelty to children.
He has pleaded not guilty.
The case has since become a legal battle over what happened inside that house.
Kumar's defense attorneys claim the shootings were an act of self-defense.
They allege that Gourav Kumar physically confronted Vijay while armed with a handgun, and that Vijay used the weapon to protect himself.
The defense has also argued that Kumar's daughter witnessed the confrontation and could support his account.
But prosecutors and attorneys representing the surviving family members dispute that explanation.
They argue that the physical evidence contradicts the self-defense claim and that Kumar's version of events does not adequately explain the deaths of all four victims.
The Gwinnett County District Attorney's Office has announced its intention to seek the death penalty.
Kumar remains in custody without bond while his attorneys pursue additional hearings and seek his release.
No trial date has been finalized, and he has not been convicted.
Meenu was 43. Gourav was 33. Nidhi was 37. Harish was 38.
Four people died inside a family home.
And while attorneys argue over what happened, three children are left with the memory of hiding in a closet while gunfire erupted around them.
Whatever a jury ultimately decides, those children deserved a childhood that didn't include calling 911 because people were being shot inside their home.
